Julia Speer, Art Educator

About Me

I'm a working visual artist & state certified art educator. I had the privilege of teaching art in the Cobb County public schools for 20 years. I received my Fine Arts degree from University of Georgia in Athens, 1978. In 1998, I added a bachelor of Science in Art Ed. from Kennesaw State University. I retired from the public school system in 2018 and continue to teach art and inspire creative expression in children and adults.

My mission is to create a safe space to explore and experiment, and not be afraid to make mistakes. As an art educator, I want my students to have the opportunity to explore as many different art mediums as possible.

In the summer, I hold kids art camps at my home studio. It's a unique experience for a child to see a real working artist's studio. Additionally, I offer Ms. Julia's Art Studio in the Cobb County After School Program (ASP) and custom paint parties for adults and children year-round.

In my own art, I like to explore many different mediums. My favorite is ceramic clay, however I don't throw on a potters wheel. I am a ceramic sculptor. I have a studio in my home with two kilns, a very large slab roller, and a Big Blue Extruder.

Art engages our creative thinking and hones our problem solving skills. I think people greatly underestimate the power of art and the positive and life-affirming impact it can have on our world. It is an honor to be able to engage with people and to interact with the world through my art.
